Kids Can Take Charge

With the rapid changes around us, we, as educators, need to be flexible with the adaptation to new environments.

One of these changes is the skill set that is needed to survive in today’s world. Such skills are essential to every person in order to succeed either in life or in academia or in the job market.

These skills are needed due to the technology explosion, information overflow, and the fast growth of the information industry. Such as, research skills, evaluating skills and most importantly Lifelonglearning skills.

In that sense, we need to encourage, guide and support our students to find their way in the learning environment and help them to navigate through their learning journey in order to acquire the necessary skills, and to master the Lifelonglearning skills.

Our role as educators is changing so is the students’ role. The new learning theories support such changes as well as any new topic.

Encourage the students to seek skills, knowledge and experience on their own terms with your guidance and support.

The Money Fever

Nowadays the survival skills differ from yesterday. Among today’s needed skills is networking skills. So in the spirit of networking, I decided to use the help of the social media different platforms. I started with Facebook (I put it on hold for the last seven years), and started looking to join groups for women entrepreneurs, or for coaching. I wanted to help other women, and add my two cents, as much as my time allows. Also, I thought I can have a discussion with like minded women about vital business issues. But what I found shocked me. These ladies (or gents) who name themselves “entrepreneurs” know nothing about business , marketing, planning, or niche. In addition, they do not have ideas to transfer to business. They don’t know what to work with. All they ask is: any ideas to make money online? Any ideas to start a business? If you don’t have the idea, if you don’t have a solution for a problem, if you don’t don’t know any gaps to bridge, then why you call yourself : an entrepreneur?

What I found is that people want to make quick money without even getting thier brain to work.

All this could be fine. But the big problem is that they either believe they know and don’t want to invest in themselves and get educated, or they just jump into the arms of any online business courses (expensive though), without even checking the educational or business background, then they claim: education is nonsense.

Is it the money fever? Or is it the social media effects? What do you think?

using social media needs information literacy skills

information literacy is not only about using the new medias (social media) to communicate with the world. the skills for using these tools are called technology skills, but what about the content? and how to sue these tools? and what are the purposes these tools can serve? we cannot just through these tools in the hands of people and saying.. these are the brand new wave in technology, r u using it? for example, when facebook starts to show up as a trending tool in the internet, a lot of people would ask their friends: r u on FB? nowadays they just assume you are on FB…

there are of issues related to using the social media (twitter, FB, etc), such as, being cool, being trend, being westernized (for the arab world), being hip hop, belong to the new generation..and so forth…but the main important and critical issue is : how to use them and for what reasons?

and that what information literacy about.. it is about the skills that individual acquire in order to be able to know what kind of information he or she should communicate with a certain social media. when and how to communicate these information. each tool has its own protocol and culture that should be taught and made it clear to users…
¬†for example u cannot write an article and publish it on twitter. twitter is made to communicate one sentence at a time..writing article needs more than one sentence, that is why there are blogs…
when i follow some twitter-articles i feel lost. i cannot understand what the person wants to say unless i have to keep scrolling. and at the same time, i would miss what other would tweet..going back to check the others’ tweet, it would be a time and effort consuming, and twitter is made to be used to communicate ideas in the rushing modes of the new societies….

do people really read the manual that would come with the the social media?

IL in today’s democratic society

UN mentioned in its report in 2006 that Information Literacy skills are the new rights for all the citizen to be active and partners in building their democratic countries. IL skills are these skills that are needed to recognize the need for information, choose the right sources and access them, evaluate the founded information and create a new knowledge and share it with the others. off course that includes the skills to store and retrieve information, acquire computer, visual, and technology skills in addition to problems solving, decision making and critical thinking skills.
some would say, oh ya, these skills are needed but not every single person should have them or need them. i say: in today’s societies, these skills are needed more than ever. every single person should have at least some degree of these skill to be able to understand what is going on around..
what is happening now in Syria is a great example of how people need to be information illiterate. this is the future of a country, a future of people and a future of a civilization that has been once shining all over the world. this future could be demolish just because of the bad judgements of its people. how is that?
people in syria, in particular, and in the arab world in general are not used yet to access different resources looking for information. well, some of them would go beyond their local TV stations to listen to BBC, or Monte Carlo, but no more than that. today, in the light of the technology explosion and information explosion, people are still unaware of the other possible information resources such as website, twitter, Facebook, and so forth, and all could present different points of view. and here i am talking about the normal average person that could not ride the wave of technology for different reasons such as economic and cultural ones. such an illiterate keeps the people within the circle of the regime’s world of news. the regime still wash the citizen’s brains and dominates such people who believe that they have a great regime that protects them and care of their lives and interests…….continue
